Living in Water

An aquatic science book, published by the Department of Education at the National Aquarium in Baltimore. It contains 50 activities that integrate physical, earth, and life science and can be used as a complete curriculum or for individual activities. Classroom based scientific studies of water, aquatic environments, and the plants and animals that live in the water. Field studies can be adapted for use in any body of water from the ocean to a fish bowl. 395 pages. Grade 5-7.

Freshwater Aquarium Chemistry

A Comprehensive Guide for Tropical Fish

This book is a comprehensive guide to every aspect of freshwater aquarium chemistry. The first chapter deals with the basics of water. Why is water a liquid? What dissolves in water and why? Later chapters delve into pH, hardness, the nitrogen cycle (ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate), and aquarium setup and maintenance. The chemsitry is described in a simple manner. Both novice and expert aquarists will benefit from the in-depth information presented herein.

Freshwater Test Kit Review

This book is a collection of reviews of the most popular and common freshwater test kits in the areas of pH, ammonia, water hardness, and nitrite and nitrate.

Chapter 1 is a review of seven freshwater pH test kits. This chapter deals with the most important water quality in an aquarium. ALL other water parameters affect and/or are affected by pH.

Chapter 2 is a review of seven freshwater ammonia test kits. Ammonia toxicity can destroy an entire aquarium overnight.

Chapter 3 is a review of eight freshwater Hardness test kits. Water hardness can have a major impact on pH (through KH) and is important for keeping stress levels to a minimum in certain species (GH).

Chapter 4 is a review of nine freshwater nitrite and nitrate test kits. While nitrite and nitrate are not usually an immediate danger to your aquarium inhabitants, they are an important indicator of the "health" of the Nitrogen Cycle.

Water Chemistry For the Marine Aquarium

Written by an expert on marine biology, this title is must reading for the marine aquarium hobbyist. Keeping ocean-dwelling fish and other marine life forms thriving in the synthetic environment of an aquarium requires special knowledge and care, especially in regard to water quality. The author discusses the properties of natural seawater, then gives details on how to create and maintain high-quality synthetic seawater. He describes biochemical cycles and fluctuating conditions that are normal in a flourishing marine aquarium, instructs on adding needed chemical components, and advises on water analysis test kits, instrumentation, and record keeping. Includes illustrations plus informative tables and charts.
